Terms of Service

These terms cover your use of the TidyText website at tidytext.cc and the TidyText Offline desktop app. By using the website or the app, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

In these terms, “TidyText,” “we,” “us,” and “our” mean TidyText, the maker of the tidytext.cc website and the TidyText Offline app. “You” means the person using the website or the app.

The product

TidyText cleans up text, for example pasting from ChatGPT and copying clean output into your documents. There are two versions:

• TidyText (web): free to use in your browser at tidytext.cc.
• TidyText Offline (desktop): a paid macOS app that runs locally, with no account and no telemetry. A Windows version is planned for a future release.

This page covers both. Where something applies only to the paid desktop app, it says so.

Buying TidyText Offline

TidyText Offline is a one-time purchase of $19 USD. There is no subscription and no recurring charge.

Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as our merchant of record. Your purchase and payment are handled by Lemon Squeezy, and Lemon Squeezy's own terms apply to that transaction (including how your payment details and any applicable tax are handled). We license the software to you; Lemon Squeezy handles the sale.

After you buy, Lemon Squeezy emails you a license key and a receipt. You activate the app with that key (one online activation on first launch; see the app's privacy policy for what that involves).

Refunds

We offer a 14-day money-back guarantee. If you request a refund within 14 days of purchase, it is approved automatically. To request one, reply to your Lemon Squeezy receipt or contact us using this form. Refunds are issued through Lemon Squeezy.

After 14 days, we consider refunds case by case. If a purchase is refunded, the associated license is revoked.

Your license

When you buy TidyText Offline, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app. The license is:

• One-time and perpetual: the version you buy is yours to keep, with no expiry.
• For up to 5 of your own devices: you can activate the app on as many as five devices. If you reach the limit and need to free a slot, contact us using this form.
• Yours, not for resale or sharing: your license and license key are for you. Please do not sell, share, sublicense, or distribute them.

We provide updates to TidyText Offline at no extra cost. Updates are optional and install only when you choose to check for them.

What you agree not to do

When using the website or the app, please do not:

• Copy, redistribute, resell, or rent the app or your license key.
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app, except to the extent the law expressly allows despite this restriction.
• Use the website or app to break the law, or to interfere with, overload, or attack the website or the services it relies on.
• Remove or obscure any copyright, trademark, or other notices.

Ownership

We and our licensors own TidyText, including the app, the website, their content, design, and code, and the TidyText name and branding. These terms do not transfer any of that to you. They grant you a license to use the app as described above, nothing more.

Privacy

How we handle data is described in our privacy policies: the website policy at tidytext.cc/privacy and the desktop app policy at tidytext.cc/offline/privacy. The desktop app collects no analytics and sends no telemetry. It goes online only to activate your license and to check for updates when you ask, and neither carries the text you process.

No warranty

TidyText is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not promise that the app or website will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose. You use them at your own risk.

Some places do not allow certain warranties to be excluded, so some of the above may not apply to you.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, TidyText will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for lost data, lost profits, or business interruption, arising from your use of the website or the app. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app will not exceed the amount you paid for it.

Some places do not allow certain liability to be limited, so some of the above may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will change the “last updated” date above, and we will try to flag significant changes more prominently. Continuing to use the website or the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute relating to these terms or to TidyText will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New York, and you agree to that venue.

General

These terms are the entire agreement between you and us about TidyText and replace any earlier terms. If any part of them is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
